What is Fistula (Bhagandar) ?
An anal fistula is a small channel that can develop between the end of the bowel and the skin near the anus. It is common among those who had the earlier anal abscess. An anal abscess is an infected cavity which is filled with pus. It is formed when anal abscess drained and not healed properly. It may cause bleeding or discharge while passing stools which may be more painful. If the anal fistula becomes severe, drainage may persist for a long time

Diagnosis
Doctors usually diagnose an anal fistula by examining the area around the anus. To determine the depth and direction of the fistula tract doctor can produce drainage from the external opening. If Fistula is not visible on skin surface, additional test like Anoscopy, in this test to see inside your rectum and anus a special instrument is used. To better define the Fistula Doctor may order an MRI or Ultrasound as well.
Anoscopy: An anoscope is a tubular device which is inserted into the anus to help the doctor visualize the anus and rectum.
Flexible sigmoidoscopy: In this process, the doctor will insert a thin tube into the bottom portion of your colon. This test is done when you are younger than 50 and have no risk factors for colon cancer.
Colonoscopy: The doctor will insert a flexible tube into the rectum which will inspect the entire colon. This test is done when you are older than 50 years of age or if you have a risk of colon cancer and signs of other conditions.
