Department of Microbiology was established in the year 2010 along with the beginning of SGT Medical college. Vision of Microbiology Department is to provide up-to-date and holistic theoretical and practical training for MBBS, MD (Microbiology), M.Sc (Medical microbiology) and PhD students, to carry out front line research in all disciplines of Microbiology, to provide committed diagnostic care to the patients of SGT hospital and to train the students, academicians and teachers in the discipline.
Department of Microbiology is a multidisciplinary unit consisting of Bacteriology, Anaerobic bacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Immunology, Parasitology, HIV laboratory (FICTC), Mycobacteriology and Hospital Infection Control laboratory.
The microbiology laboratory is equipped with state of the art diagnostic facilities viz. automated blood culture system (BACTEC), automated identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing system (Vitek-2), Conventional PCR, Fluorescent microscope along with other conventional microbiological tools for diagnostic services.
The department offers excellent opportunities for research in infectious diseases in various units. Twenty one PhD students are enrolled with the department of microbiology including two students who have completed their research work. Department has published 55 research articles in the period from 2014-2019.
The department has taken a major initiative in Hospital Infection Control. The major components of activities undertaken by the department are manpower development through training for nurses to generate a backup of infection control team nurses and monitoring of antimicrobial resistant organisms.
The department also houses the secretariat for Institutional Research committee, Institutional Ethical committee and publication of the SGT university journal ‘Indian Journal of Health Sciences and Care’.
